Ride of Duty Welcome by Andy Savage
Hi all and welcome to all past and new riders and participants to this years “Ride of Duty” 2019. I have jotted down a few words on the events background and how this boutique styled Cycling Event evolved to what has now become today.

In the beginning:
After organising several successful cycle events supporting prostate cancer, I decided to change my support as there were numerous fundraisers supporting various cancer foundations. I also wanted to align the event with a national date of Significance like Anzac Day.

Two things stood out came together, the Burleigh Heads RSL and Anzac Day.

Through my father in law who is a member of the RSL and an ex serviceman I was introduced to Chris Keating the former RSL president. I found that this grass roots RSL operating from a war memorial hall could benefit from a community event so they could provide hampers and support to widows and ageing veterans.

After researching both world wars I found a vital connection with cycling, I then posted this story on our website. The event foundations had now been created, yes “A Ride to Remember” or our very own “A Tour of Duty Cycle Ride”. Both wordings have deep connections with military, armed services and cycling.

Organising the event each year leading up to Anzac Day brings an emotional element as the community rallies to honour the fallen. It makes the event very special especially with the attendance of members from the RSL. They are always willing to attend, be available, pitch in. Its also great for the events participants to meet and talk with those old diggers, the very people and the families they are supporting by riding in this event.

We also gain great satisfaction to see and meet all the riders who support the Ride of Duty event, which is bringing real people past and present , connecting them at the finish line.  The finish line is like no other right in front of the North Burleigh RSL – a place of significance for these local RSL members, ti really brings us all together as one, and shows everyone what the event stands for.
